ABSTRACT
Schools, where children frequently stay in, are breeding ground for dengue because they usually have large open windows and mosquito repellents are scarce, thereby posing much danger for all to get infected. Once educated, children can protect themselves and disseminate the information to their parents and the broader community. This descriptive study was undertaken to determine the knowledge and engagement of the stakeholders of a public secondary school in Central Negros in the school-based dengue program when they are grouped according to age, sex, and civil status. Self-made questionnaires were administered to respondents, comprised of 235 students and parents, 26 teachers, 10 non-government representatives, and nine local government workers. Findings revealed that as a whole and when grouped according to variables, stakeholders have an average level of knowledge about dengue. There is no consistency in the level of engagement of all stakeholders with regards to dengue-related activities. Age, sex, civil status, and educational status can affect a person’s ability to possess knowledge about dengue, while an individual’s age, civil status, and educational status can make a difference in being able to engage in activities relative to dengue prevention and control. Knowledge about dengue does not dictate engagement in activities that could prevent or control it. It is recommended that dengue be included as a topic for discussion in all classes for all levels to increase students’ moderate level of knowledge about dengue and that fun-filled, meaningful activities be lined up during the staging of a Dengue Awareness Week to arouse students and other stakeholders’ interest and motivation to participate and contribute.
